Already decided you want a mechanical keyboard? This cheat sheet covers the three choices that actually change how it feels on your desk: switch type, size, and wired vs Bluetooth. Generic buyer facts only — check each product page for what a specific model includes.
Switch types (plain English)
- Clicky (often labeled Blue) — you hear a click and feel a bump. Fun for typing; can bother people nearby.
- Tactile (often labeled Brown) — a bump you feel, without a loud click. A common all-rounder for mixed work and play.
- Linear (often labeled Red) — smooth press, no bump. Popular for fast keystrokes; some typists find it mushy until they get used to it.
Same color names are used across many budget boards. They describe the feel, not a brand we can certify. For membrane vs mechanical, see How to pick a keyboard.
Size / layout
- Full-size (~104 keys) — number pad included. Best if you type numbers a lot.
- TKL / 87-key — no number pad. Same main keys, more mouse room on a small desk.
- 75% — compact but usually keeps function keys and arrows, packed tighter.
- 65% — arrows stay; function row is usually gone. A popular small-desk size.
- 60% — smallest common layout. No number pad, no function row, often no dedicated arrows (those move to layers). Maximum mouse space; steeper learning curve.
Smaller boards save space. They do not automatically type better — pick the keys you use every day.
Wired vs Bluetooth
- Wired — plug in and go. No batteries, no pairing. One cable on the desk.
- Bluetooth — connects to phones, tablets, and laptops without a USB dongle. You will charge or replace batteries. Some boards also take a 2.4 GHz dongle (a small USB receiver) for a dedicated wireless link.
- Dual-mode — wired plus wireless on the same board. Useful if you dock a laptop and also type on the couch.
Bluetooth latency is fine for writing and most casual play. Competitive gaming is still simpler on wired or a 2.4 GHz dongle when the product offers one.
