Picking a keyboard shouldn’t feel like reading a textbook. Here’s a plain-English cheat sheet.
Membrane vs mechanical
- Membrane — softer, quieter, usually cheaper. Fine for school, office, and casual use. Keys press on a rubber-ish layer under the caps.
- Mechanical — each key has its own switch. More “clicky” or “thocky” feel, often preferred for typing all day or gaming. Usually costs more.
- Mechanical-feel — looks or sounds a bit mechanical but isn’t full mechanical switches. A middle ground on price and feel.
Blue, Brown, Red switches (simple version)
- Blue — clicky and tactile. You hear and feel a bump. Fun for typing; can annoy roommates.
- Brown — tactile bump without a loud click. A friendly all-rounder for mixed work and play.
- Red — smooth press, no bump. Popular for gaming and fast keystrokes; some typists find it “mushy” until they get used to it.
Other quick picks
- Full-size — number pad included. Great for spreadsheets.
- 87-key / TKL — no number pad. More mouse room on a small desk.
- Wired — plug in and go, no batteries.
- Wireless / Bluetooth — cleaner desk; remember charging or batteries.
