Desk Setup Basics: Keyboard, Mouse, and Pad

A good desk setup isn’t about buying everything at once. Start with three pieces that work together.

1. Keyboard

Park it centered on your desk with enough room for your wrists to rest naturally. If your desk is small, a compact or 87-key board leaves more space for your mouse.

2. Mouse

Keep it on the same surface height as the keyboard. If your shoulder gets tired, bring the mouse closer and slow the cursor speed in your computer settings.

3. Mouse pad / desk mat

  • Small pad — fine if you mostly click and browse.
  • Large / extended pad — better if you move the mouse a lot for games or design.
  • Full desk mat — smoothes the whole workspace and looks tidy under keyboard + mouse.

Quick comfort tips

  • Screen at roughly eye level; sit so your elbows can bend near 90°.
  • Cable clutter: route wires toward the back edge or use a simple under-desk tray if you have one.
  • Lighting is optional — RGB is fun, not required for a solid setup.

A simple desk layout that stays comfortable

  1. Keyboard centered on you, not the monitor. Align the B key with your torso; shift the monitor to match so your shoulders stay square.
  2. Mouse height matches the keyboard. Keep both on the same pad or level so your wrist does not climb a ledge between devices.
  3. Pad size follows your aim style. If the mouse hits the keyboard side during a swipe, size up to a large or extended mat.
  4. Keep a clear tracking zone. Drinks and notebooks off the pad reduce dust and spills on sensors and cloth surfaces.

Lighting without clutter

Put the brightest light behind the monitor and keep desk-level RGB dimmer so key legends stay readable. Questions about fitting a combo on a narrow desk? spgdsllc@gmail.com.
